Paella experience

Paella is a typical lunch dish in Valencia and traditionally originates from the ‘huerta’ (agricultural fields around Valencia). True to tradition, you can participate in the rural paella experience by preparing the classic ‘paella Valenciana’ with chicken and rabbit.

In a small former fisherman village, about 20 kms from Valencia, we visit a Valencian family garden for a paella cooking class to prepare the ‘paella Valenciana’ together, in its place of origin! Arranged transport will pick us up from the city center. We’ll drive past the Valencian rice fields, the beautiful Albufera lake and make a stop to do some bird spotting (hopefully the Flamingo!).

Our host Eva and her family will be waiting for us at their family-owned ‘huerta’ (vegetable garden) with their own little harbour that connects with the Albufera lake. Soon we’ll be cooking outdoors, surrounded by nature only using local ingredients! We’ll enjoy a fun-filled and dynamic paella competition in two teams to see who makes the best paella Valenciana! After cooking, we’ll be rewarded with a delicious lunch with typical traditional dishes from the Albufera!

Rural 'paella Valenciana' cooking class

Embark on a unique culinary journey in the heart of the Albufera region, the birthplace of the traditional Paella Valenciana! We’ll discover the beautiful Natural Park Albufera, surrounded by Valencian rice fields—the very same rice we’ll use later in our cooking class. As you explore, soak in the beauty of the Albufera lake and the charm of traditional Valencian ‘barracas,’ rustic houses that add an authentic touch to the landscape.

Our adventure begins at the official bird sighting center, offering the perfect opportunity to spot a variety of migratory and local species. Keep an eye out for the majestic Flamingos that often grace the surroundings!! After a leisurely walk and bird-watching session, we’ll be warmly welcomed into Eva’s family-owned vegetable garden, intimately connected to the Albufera lake. And if you’re up for it, there’s even an option for a boat ride after our paella cooking class!

Picture yourself in the midst of nature, engaged in an outdoor paella cooking competition. We’ll divide the group into two teams, with drinks and appetizers flowing as we get down to cooking. Begin by chopping and prepping all the fresh ingredients for our traditional Paella Valenciana. And that’s not all—you’ll also get to savor different local tapas like ‘Esgarraet’ and ‘All i Pebre,’ alongside a refreshing Valencian vegetable salad. Enjoy unlimited drinks, including fine red and white wines from the Valencian wine region.

Once the paellas are ready, we’ll have a blind tasting showdown to crown the ultimate paella! The winning team gets a surprise prize! Now it’s time to savor our homemade paellas! We’ll enjoy a laidback lunch and conclude with fresh seasonal fruit, Valencian cake and a sip of the local liqueur! Sounds like a plan!

And for those arriving later in the day or preferring a more intimate city center experience with a smaller group during the evening, check out our Clandestine Paella Experience.
